Le Fil is a British-Chinese multidisciplinary artist and performer whose practice moves between drag, music, fashion, performance, sculpture and popular culture. Originally trained in ceramics and sculpture, Le Fil developed an artistic persona that could bring these different disciplines together, describing the name “Le Fil” – meaning “the thread” in French – as the connecting thread running through their creative practice.
At the centre of Le Fil’s work is an exploration of identity, gender and the ways people construct and present themselves to the world. Rather than understanding drag simply as transformation or an imitation of femininity, Le Fil approaches it as an amplification of the self and a form of artistic expression.
Their work draws on fashion, costume, music and performance to question conventional ideas of masculinity and femininity, while challenging the distinction between what is considered contemporary art and what is dismissed as entertainment.
Le Fil has brought this perspective to mainstream audiences through RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, using the platform to foreground queer Asian representation and their British-Chinese heritage. Their runway presentations draw on art-school training and Chinese cultural references, treating costume, material and the body as elements through which stories can be constructed. Le Fil describes this approach as “pop sculpture”, positioning both popular culture and their own body as materials for artistic practice.
On the Pearl Lam Podcast, Le Fil joins Pearl Lam for a provocative conversation about whether drag should be understood as contemporary art. Together, they explore constructed identity, femininity, fashion, queer Asian representation and the politics of visibility, while questioning why performance in a gallery is legitimised as art while similar acts in a nightclub are often treated as entertainment. Their conversation ultimately asks who gets to define art, and whether drag has always exposed the transformation, illusion and spectacle on which art itself is built.
