Billie Milam Weisman is a distinguished art conservator, curator, and collector, known for her significant contributions to the preservation and promotion of modern and contemporary art. As the president and director of the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation in Los Angeles, she has played a crucial role in curating and expanding a remarkable collection of 20th-century artworks.

Weisman earned her master’s degree in art history from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she developed a profound appreciation for art’s historical and cultural contexts. Following her graduate studies, she pursued postgraduate training in art conservation at Harvard University, refining her expertise in preserving and restoring artworks.

Her professional career led her to key positions in prestigious institutions. She served as the head of sculpture conservation at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where she was responsible for the care and maintenance of the museum’s extensive sculpture collection. Additionally, she worked in decorative art conservation at the J. Paul Getty Museum, further enhancing her reputation in the field.

In the mid-1980s, Weisman’s path crossed with that of Frederick R. Weisman, a prominent art collector and philanthropist. Their relationship developed into a collaborative partnership, with Billie becoming deeply involved in the management and curation of his extensive collection. Following Frederick’s passing in 1994, she took on the role of overseeing the foundation, ensuring that his vision of making art accessible to the public was realised.

Under her leadership, the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation has flourished, with its collection featuring works by some of the most renowned artists of the 20th century, including Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, and Jackson Pollock. Billie has worked tirelessly to maintain the integrity of the collection, organising exhibitions, overseeing conservation efforts, and facilitating loans to major museums and institutions worldwide.

Beyond her work with the foundation, Weisman has been an influential figure in the art world, advocating for the importance of conservation and education in the arts. Her expertise and dedication have ensured that the Weisman collection remains an invaluable resource for scholars, artists, and art enthusiasts alike.

Her contributions to the field have been widely recognised, and she continues to be an active force in the world of modern and contemporary art. Through her stewardship, the Weisman Art Foundation remains a testament to the power of collecting, preserving, and sharing art with future generations.
