Ali Güreli is a Turkish art collector and the founder and chairman of Contemporary Istanbul, one of Turkey’s leading international contemporary art fairs. For over two decades, he has worked to strengthen Istanbul’s position in the global art market, bringing together artists, galleries, collectors and cultural institutions from across the world.

Before establishing Contemporary Istanbul in 2006, Güreli founded Art Istanbul, Turkey’s first contemporary art fair, in 2001. His experience spans contemporary art, hospitality, tourism and cultural development, including leadership roles in major Turkish hospitality and exhibition organisations.

Through Contemporary Istanbul, Güreli has helped cultivate a growing generation of Turkish collectors while creating opportunities for international galleries and emerging artists. His work emphasises the importance of cultural exchange, sustained patronage and building an art ecosystem that connects local artistic identity with international audiences.

Güreli continues to advocate for Istanbul as a cultural capital in its own right, drawing on the city’s rich historical heritage while expanding its influence in contemporary art and the wider international cultural landscape.

In this episode of The Pearl Lam Podcast, Güreli joins Pearl Lam (林明珠) for a live conversation at Contemporary Istanbul. Together, they explore Istanbul’s cultural identity, the influence of international art markets, the role of collectors and galleries in shaping artistic value, and the future of art fairs in an increasingly interconnected world.
