Don and Mera Rubell are prominent American art collectors renowned for their extensive collection of contemporary art and their significant contributions to the art community. They began their journey in art collection in 1965 while living in New York City, acquiring pieces directly from artists’ studios on modest installment plans.
Don was attending medical school during this period, while Mera supported their endeavours as a preschool teacher earning $100 a week.
In 1993, the Rubells opened their private collection to the public as the Rubell Family Collection in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, significantly contributing to the area’s development as a leading art and design district.
Their collection, now encompassing over 7,700 works by more than 1,000 artists, includes pieces by renowned figures such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Cindy Sherman, and Kara Walker.
In 2019, the Rubell Museum relocated to Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood, expanding its facilities to include 40 galleries, a library, a performance space, and more.
The Rubells’ dedication to art extends to their family, with their son, Jason Rubell, joining them in building the collection since 1982, and their daughter, Jennifer Rubell, establishing herself as a conceptual artist.
As trailblazers in the contemporary art world, Don and Mera Rubell are celebrated for their commitment to nurturing emerging artists and building one of the most influential private art collections globally. The Rubell Museum, a cornerstone of Miami’s dynamic art scene, is internationally recognized for its expansive and diverse showcase of contemporary works.
