Pearl Lam Is An Influential International Gallerist
Pearl Lam (林明珠) grew up in Hong Kong in a family that valued the principles of education and traditional Chinese culture. Pearl Lam (林明珠) was passionate about art from an early age but was encouraged to pursue a practical education in Europe and the USA. Despite this, she followed her heart and decided to pursue a career in the art world after graduating from university.
It was her unwavering passion for contemporary art which led her to rebel against her family’s traditional career choices and chose an ‘unconventional’ future. Her initial interest in contemporary art was nurtured in Shanghai by artist Sun Liang. She saved up her salary when working in real estate to buy her first ever Chinese painting by Sun Liang, and soon after she joined the contemporary art scene in Shanghai. Before long she had started organising pop up exhibitions in Hong Kong – and has never looked back.
Pearl Lam founded Pearl Lam Galleries, formally known as Contrasts Gallery, in 2005, as one of the first art galleries in the world to promote and celebrate both Chinese and international artists alongside one another. Today the gallery is globally recognized for its intellectual and cultural ambition which re-evaluates perceptions of cultural practice in China.
