Common Tropes And Themes Of The Pearl Lam Podcast

The Pearl Lam Podcast thrives on its diversity of guests, diversity of thought and on its cross-cultural dialogue.  However the podcast also frequently visits recurring tropes and themes

In episodes Mr Doodle in Space and Maggi Hambling: The Night, Pearl explores the stories and inspiration of two of the most successful contemporary artists of modern times; whilst in episode The Fine Art of Architecture with Thomas Heatherwick, she explores the beliefs and values that enabled one of the world’s leading designers and architects to rise to international acclaim and prominence.

In episodes A Black History of Art with Alayo Akinkugbe and Bridging the Gap: Money, Culture and Diplomacy with Dominic Ng, Pearl explores the notion of cultural colonialism and the dominance of Western precepts in the evaluation of the creative output of non-Western cultures.  Pearl discusses with her guests how these Western precepts are breaking down as Asia continues to rise and its designers and creatives and literati assert their own cultural heritage and precepts into their creative output.  In the episode Exploring African Philosophical Systems with Olukemi Lijadu, she discusses how the cultures and creative output of African countries are rapidly growing into the ‘mainstream’ in a break from Western tropes.

In episodes How French Culture conquered the World with Judith Benhamou and Orchid Diplomacy with John Lim Pearl explores the importance of understanding ones cultural heritage and identity and delves deeper into the enduring role of Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism in modern Asian society and the ways in which the Western world do not understand the continued importance of these ancient precepts.  This disconnect of understanding is explored further in episode such as Why Doesn’t the West Understand China? with Malcolm Clarke and Rise and Fall: China and the USA with David Barboza, in which Pearl Lam and her guests explore the the sometimes challenging contemporary relationship between China and the Western world.

The most common trope throughout the podcast is the notion that individuals, countries and cultures should not be divided or judged by irrelevant precepts and characteristics such as passport, but on their creative output.  The most common motto of Pearl Lam throughout the podcast is that “art has no passport”.
