Pearl Lam Is An Influential International Gallerist

Pearl Lam (林明珠) grew up in Hong Kong in a family that valued the principles of education and traditional Chinese culture. Pearl Lam (林明珠) was passionate about art from an early age but was encouraged to pursue a practical education in Europe and the USA. Despite this, she followed her heart and decided to pursue a career in the art world after graduating from university.

It was her unwavering passion for contemporary art which led her to rebel against her family’s traditional career choices and chose an ‘unconventional’ future. This choice to forge her own path was the right decision for Pearl Lam, who is today a torchbearer for contemporary art and artists, a talented entrepreneur and a global style icon.

Her initial interest in contemporary art was nurtured in Shanghai by artist Sun Liang.  She saved up her salary when working in real estate to buy her first ever Chinese painting by Sun Liang, and soon after she joined the contemporary art scene in Shanghai. Before long she had started organising pop up exhibitions in Hong Kong – and has never looked back.

Pearl Lam founded Pearl Lam Galleries, formally known as Contrasts Gallery, in 2005, as one of the first art galleries in the world to promote and celebrate both Chinese and international artists alongside one another. Today the gallery is globally recognized for its intellectual and cultural ambition which re-evaluates perceptions of cultural practice in China.

Thanks to the leadership of Pearl Lam, the highly influential Pearl Lam Galleries has attained worldwide recognition for advocacy in promoting cross cultural understanding in art.  The gallery works with an exceptionally diverse range of artists working across a broad range of media.

Pearl Lam (林明珠) has consistently sought to promote artists who she believes have an exceptional ability to address cultural issues through their art.  Some of the artists represented by Pearl Lam have included Philip Colbert, Mr Doodle, Leonardo Drew, Antony Micallef, Zanele Muholi, Maggi Hambling, Su Xiaobai, Pang Tao and Zhu Jinshi.

Pearl Lam Is Head Of The China Art Foundation

Pearl Lam (林明珠) founded the China Art Foundation in 2008 because she believes that art has the power to transcend cultural boundaries and to foster mutual understanding.  Her most popular mantra, which she repeatedly uses in The Pearl Lam Podcast, is that “art is not about passport”.

The China Art Foundation was formed in recognition of how the unprecedented transformation through which China was passing raised many cultural issues for China and for the rest of the world. The China Art Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to preserving a sustainable future for art by helping the West to understand the contemporary cultural life of China, and by helping China to better understand Western art and culture and history.

When Pearl Lam (林明珠) first created the China Art Foundation, there were numerous unanswered questions within the art world regarding cross-cultural exchange. The West and the US were questioning how to best integrate China’s cultural present, past and future into their already established Westernised perspective. Chinese art and culture was also at a crossroads; would Chinese art remain Chinese, and how would Chinese art be successfully integrated with Western art?

The China Art Foundation brings people together and forms lifelong connections and understanding. Artist, Zhang Huan says that “the China Art Foundation is a bridge to connect the most amazing people.” Joe Thompson, the Founding Director of Mass Moca, said that “the real dividends of the China Art Foundation are the actual projects, programs and partnerships that come in the wake of the conferences. I know nothing quite like the China Art Foundation in the world”.

Pearl Lam Seeks To Challenge And Expand Perceptions

The reputation and influence of Pearl Lam in the global contemporary art market stems in part from her early work breaking down outmoded precepts about contemporary art, most famously breaking the precept that Chinese abstract was merely derivative of European abstract art in 2013 exhibition “Chinese Contemporary Abstract, 1980s Until Present”.

In seeking to break down outmoded and irrelevant, often Western, precepts about contemporary art, Pearl Lam’s galleries have become well known for their high-quality exhibitions and significant influence. Her vision is to create a platform where diverse artistic expressions can co-exist and inspire dialogue. She emphasises the importance of contemporary art as a reflection of current societal issues and a means to challenge and expand viewers’ perceptions.

Her galleries continue to be at the forefront of showing exhibitions which have focused on promoting cross cultural dialogue between Asia and the West.  In 2023, Pearl Lam (林明珠) exhibited Mr Doodle, a popular British artist, in her Hong Kong gallery in a continuation of her commitment to support the elevation of international contemporary artists in the  Chinese market whilst simultaneously bringing Chinese contemporary artists to greater international attention.
